Recorded at AAA 2019, Friday, March 29, 2019

Presenter: Jessica R. Stich-Hennen, AuD, PASC

CEUs: 0.1

Instructional Level: Intermediate

Description: Diagnosing a child with hearing loss is the beginning of a long journey for the family.  The making the choice and accepting hearing technology can be a daunting task for families.  Pediatric audiologists are challenged to provide enough information while still addressing families emotional needs.  Families are complex systems with many connections and challenges. During this presentation will identify and discuss potential avenues for counseling to occur, discuss potential barriers and identify strategies to increase family support.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss counseling (styles or practices) used by pediatric audiologists in hearing aid fittings and follow-up care using a family centered approach.
  2. Discuss potential family barriers in consistent hearing aid use and regular hearing aid care and maintenance for families with medically complex situations.
  3. Discuss possible strategies to improve relationship between audiologist and family, while at the same time improve outcomes for the child.
