Learning Outcomes: Upon completion, each participant in the eAudiology Web Seminar will be able to:

  1. Explain the important special inferences in counseling offered by personal styles for both patients and clinicians generated by the Kiersey Temperament Sorter.
  2. List the spirit, principles, and microskills of Motivational Interviewing (MI).
  3. Describe the implications of using personal style and motivational interviewing as a counseling procedure with their patients.

Description:

Abstract: Audiologists typically counsel patients by supplying cognitive information presenting the cold hard facts. There is a lack of real listening among clinicians that facilitates comfort and experience in managing affect or feeling statements.  Further, lack of listening reduces time for patients to tell their “story” facilitating an understanding of their personal style that tells how they interact with their environment.  This discussion presents in importance of integrating personal style and motivational interviewing as the ideal flow for patient clinical visits.

Summary: Audiologists are exceptionally skilled at "content counseling" where they deal with technical aspects of care that is information-based (hair cell dysfunction; streaming technology; REM; BPPV; cochlear implants, etc.) Most patient interactions are based on the medical model of history taking, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.   The mistake audiologists make in most situations is that they see their task as just supplying cognitive information--hard cold facts and descriptions.  They want to be the expert at being informative.  There is a lack of comfort and experience in managing affect or feeling statements, as well as allowing time for patients to tell their “story.”  Feelings are the major factor that make patients feel connected to us.  Patients respond positively to having their feelings acknowledged and validated, as it reflects their affective experience in relation to their worlds.  Often, patients will not adopt treatment recommendations due to poor listening skills on the part of the clinician.

This session will address the major psychological dynamics of a typical hearing care office visit.  Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counseling strategy to manage a variety of health problems such as smoking cessation, drug/alcohol addiction and psychiatric disorders. Attendees will participate in MI training exercises that they can use in daily practice.
