Current Theories for Vestibular/Balance Dysfunction following Sports-Related Concussion

April 24, 2019 3:00-4:30 PM ET

Presenter: Jamie M. Bogle, AuD, PhD

CEUs: 0.15 CEUs

Duration: 90 Minutes

Instructional Level: Intermediate

Program Focus: Knowledge

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion, each participant in the eAudiology Web Seminar will be able to:

  1. Discuss the various vestibular diagnostic evaluations available for concussion testing
  2. Identify key areas of dysfunction for patients post-concussion
  3. Explain how protocols may be adjusted for pediatric assessment

Description:

Vestibular/Balance Dysfunction in Sports-Related Concussion – this eAudiology Web Seminar will review current theoretical explanations for the dizziness and imbalance often reported following sports-related concussion.  Unfortunately, vestibular diagnostic results are highly variable in this population.  Less commonly performed tests, such as functional VOR testing and dynamic balance assessment, are important for appropriate patient management.  This presentation will discuss the current theories for vestibular presentation and what we can best do clinically to evaluate patients post-concussion.  Discussion of pediatric and adult protocols will be provided.  Case examples will highlight the patterns of vestibular and balance dysfunction often noted in patients following concussion as well as expected recovery trajectories.

Jamie M. Bogle, AuD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Audiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and the division chair of Audiology at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  She also holds academic rank at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Salus University, and Gallaudet University.  Clinically, Dr. Bogle evaluates children and adults with dizziness and imbalance due to peripheral and central conditions.  She is interested in improving the diagnostic tools available for evaluating patients across the lifespan to better understand inner ear function in both typical and disordered patients.  Her research interests include the integration of visual and vestibular information in individuals with neurological impairments, including concussion, and the improved understanding of the importance of vestibular gravito-inertial information into overall body function.  She earned her Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) and PhD from the University of Colorado at Boulder and was awarded the James and Martha Crawford Endowed Clinical Research Fellowship in Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic Florida.  Dr. Bogle has been awarded the 2018 Outstanding Early-Career Audiologist Award from the American Academy of Audiology.
