Description:  

This presentation will provide a brief overview of affirming and welcoming practices for working with LGBTQ+ patients. The session will include language and terminology as well as ways to improve patient care through improved office policies, forms, and the physical environment. In addition, a variety of resources will be provided so that participants can stay up to date on best clinical practices as well as information for patients.

1. Evaluate knowledge of LGBTQ+ affirming language to use with patients 
2. Identify at least 2 strategies to increase affirming and welcoming practices for LGBTQ+ patients
3. Recognize at least 2 resources to further enhance care for LGBTQ+ patients

Megan A. Mooney, PhD

Megan A. Mooney, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Houston, TX. Dr. Mooney’s undergraduate degree is from Vanderbilt University and her doctorate degree is from the University of Arkansas. She completed her internship in professional psychology with the Baylor College of Medicine Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Mooney is the recent Past President for the Texas Psychological Association and is also a member of the Houston Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association. She is a member of the clinical faculty with Baylor College of Medicine and adjunct faculty with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. Dr. Mooney is an affiliate member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

Dr. Mooney has focused on serving traumatized children and families for 18 years and she has a specialty interest in working with LGBTQ+ youth who are disproportionately impacted by a variety of traumatic experiences. She has presented locally and nationally about trauma, treatments for trauma in children and families, and ways to prevent and treat trauma in LGBTQ+ youth.  Dr. Mooney is a co-founder of Gender Infinity, a non-profit that focuses on education and advocacy in support of gender expansive children and their families. In 2017, Dr. Mooney was named one of OutSmart Magazine’s Leading Ladies because of her work with LGBTQ+ youth.

Dr. Mooney has published a screening tool to identify the intersection of trauma and sexual orientation and gender identity. She is also a co-founder of Gender Infinity, a non-profit in Houston, TX that focuses on education and advocacy for transgender youth and their families. She receives no financial benefit from either of these.

Dr. Mooney is working on an adaptation of a trauma-focused treatment for families of LGBTQ+ youth. She receives a small financial stipend for this work from the University of Maryland as part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
