Interpreting Central Nystagmus – A Clinical Approach

December 17, 2019, 1:00-2:00 pm Eastern Time

Presenter: Devin McCaslin, PhD

CEUs: 0.1 AAA/Tier 1 CUEs

Duration: 1 hour

Instructional Level: Intermediate

Program Focus: Knowledge

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion, each participant in the eAudiology Web Seminar will be able to:

  1. describe the central vestibular structures that are associated with nystagmus of a central origin.
  2. identify nystagmus associated with impairments in the various cerebellar centers.
  3. describe the treatments that are often recommended for ocular motor disorders.

Description: Audiologists engaged in the assessment of the vestibular system must be capable of characterizing the different forms of peripheral and central nystagmus.  An accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for patients is often based on the results of the interpretation of the vestibular laboratory testing. This course will discuss the terminology and etiology of the different types of nystagmus that have a central origin. Also discussed will be the axes or planes and direction of eye movements associated with central nystagmus patterns. Finally, the talk will review how to classify nystagmus and how to distinguish the different central forms.
