This program will introduce over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids as an opportunity for audiologists and pharmacists to collaborate in hearing care. The primary roles and scopes of practice of audiologists and pharmacists will be reviewed. Historical, current, and futuristic models of collaboration between audiology and pharmacy will be discussed. 

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Introduce OTC hearing aids as an opportunity for collaborative practice between audiologists and pharmacists in local communities.
2. Review the roles and scopes of practice for audiologists and pharmacists in the United States.
3. Discuss historical, current, and futuristic collaborative working relationships between audiologists and pharmacists in the context of hearing care.

Presented in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh, this session will offer continuing education hours for both Audiologists and Pharmacists.

The University of Pittsburgh is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This knowledge-based activity provides 1.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit.

Lucas Berenbrok, PharmD

Dr. Lucas Berenbrok is an Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. He mentors students with interests in changing community pharmacy practice through enhanced community pharmacy services and innovative research. With faculty members from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Luke created pharmacist competencies for over-the-counter hearing aids and the nation's first OTC hearing aid training program for community pharmacists.

Elaine Mormer, PhD

Elaine Mormer is Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Education in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. Mormer has published and presented continuing education programs at national and international conferences on evidence based clinical education across health professions. She is a co-developer of the “Championing Hearing Using Accessible Medication Experts at the Community Pharmacy” (CHAMP) certificate course for pharmacy students and professionals. She received the American Academy of Audiology Outstanding Educator Award in 2020.
