Description: Aural rehabilitation is the comprehensive treatment that audiologists provide to help patients cope with the challenges related to hearing loss.  However, there seems to be some confusion among providers about what constitutes a comprehensive AR program, why it is necessary to incorporate all aspects of AR, and how to effectively make this fit into our busy clinic schedules.  This course will answer these questions by providing practical strategies and readily available tools that can be implemented immediately.

1. List the components of a comprehensive aural rehabilitation program.
2. Describe 4 strategies that will help to overcome commonly reported challenges related to the provision of aural rehabilitation.
3. Identify several specific tools that can be used immediately to incorporate education, counseling, and auditory training into the treatment program.

Dusty Jessen, AuD is the founder of 5 Keys Communication. She practiced audiology for 2 years in a hospital setting, 15 years in an ENT clinic, and is now the proud owner of a private practice in Littleton, Colorado. Dr. Jessen’s passion revolves around patient education and counseling. In 2014 she wrote and published a patient handbook, “5 Keys to Communication Success” which is now the backbone of the 5 Keys Communication aural rehabilitation program. Dr. Jessen has published many articles on the topic of aural rehabilitation and has spoken for state and national conferences around the world about the critical importance of keeping patient education and counseling at the forefront of our treatment plans in order to shift the focus back to our professional services and set ourselves apart from the commodity options available to patients today.
