Description:
The past decade has brought about changes in technology and criteria for treatment of severe to profound hearing loss. Cochlear implants are now a common consideration not only for bilateral profound losses but also for unilateral hearing loss when a hearing aid provides no benefit in the affected ear. Concurrently, the capabilities of power hearing aids have dramatically improved with effective feedback management, Bluetooth connectivity, rechargeability, advanced noise management influenced by Artificial Intelligence, and the availability of a variety of innovative accessories. This session will focus on selection criteria and available options for fitting severe to profound hearing loss.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Describe how Artificial Intelligence in hearing aid fittings may benefit patients with severe to profound hearing loss.
2. Apply a systematic strategy when evaluating candidacy for hearing aids vs cochlear implantation.
3. Evaluate the patient’s lifestyle along with expected battery life to inform a decision about replaceable vs rechargeable batteries.
