Description: This program will examine the "diabetic ear" and the medications that have auditory and vestibular side effects. Patient management strategies will be presented along with a link for audiologists to download this reference information. The program continues with a recommended guideline for audiometric testing for Type II diabetes patients as well as for patients who might be “at risk” for diabetes. The medication side effects list will be available for attendees.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize why and how diabetes affects the auditory system and the drugs that could affect each system.

2. Plan a hearing screening and monitoring program for adult diabetic patients.

3. Learn effective management strategies for the diabetic patient, their family as well as with allied health professionals.

Audiology Consultant

Robert M. DiSogra, AuD, is an independent audiology consultant in Millstone, NJ. He maintained private practice for 30 years in Freehold, NJ until 2015. He currently teaches undergraduate courses in audiology at Kean University in NJ and a Pharmacology (hybrid) course at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco. He received his Doctor of Audiology degree in 2003 from the Osborne College of Audiology at Salus University. He holds a Masters Degree in Audiology from Hofstra University and a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Education from St. John's University. Dr. DiSogra was the 2016 recipient of the Dr. Joel Wernick Award from the Academy of Doctors of Audiology. He is the past Chairperson of the Osborne College of Audiology Advisory Board at Salus University. Dr. DiSogra is US Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam era.
