Description:
Many service providers are making the move toward providing trauma-informed care, with some states even requiring that models be trauma- informed within agencies. This presentation will define trauma and trauma-informed care from a service provider’s perspective and review several examples of how trauma may show up in a service environment.
We will discuss unique factors impacting individuals and families in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community including medical traumas and systemic/cultural traumas. Participants will review guidelines from SAMHSA publication, Key Ingredients for Successful Trauma-Informed Care (2016) and be given practical guidelines for creating safety for those who have experienced traumas. This will include reviewing the role of consent as a service provider, how to make treatment clear and predictable, and creating emotional safety through open communication. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the concept of trauma, how it continues to impact future services provided, and how to make small changes in their approaches with patients while keeping these ideas in mind.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Define and review key symptoms of trauma.
2. Discuss the six Key Ingredients of Successful Trauma-Informed Care (SAMHSA).
3. Identify several ways in which audiologists can improve their practice by providing trauma informed care.
