Description:
Balance conditions and falls can be directly vestibular in nature, or they may be a consequence of medication therapy, causing unsteadiness, dizziness, or vertigo. There are times these symptoms cannot be distinguished by the patient themselves.
This presentation will cover some of the medications that may lead to balance conditions and the risk of falling. The speaker will discuss drug classifications that may directly harm the vestibular system, and the myriad of medications that have dizziness, fall risk, and vertigo as prevalent adverse effects. In addition, the session will describe types of vestibular testing that may be done to better evaluate and treat these conditions in affected patients.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Recognize vestibulotoxic medications by name, uses, and action on the balance system.
2. Identify other medications associated with fall risk by name, uses, and their effect on the body.
