Description:
This course is designed to facilitate understanding the role physical therapists can play in the care of patients with vestibular conditions and fostering collaborative interdisciplinary education. The aim of this presentation is to help audiologists identify the types of diagnoses treated by physical therapy and have familiarity with the examination, evaluation, and treatment of patients with vestibular conditions. Following this presentation, audiologists will confidently know when it is appropriate to refer their patients to physical therapists with advanced training in vestibular rehabilitation for proper care.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify the types of vestibular pathologies/diagnoses treated by physical therapists, as well as recognizing appropriate referrals.
2. Recognize the components of the physical therapy examination and evaluation.
3. Familiarize themselves with current clinical practice guidelines by physical therapists as well as treatment goals, techniques, and outcome assessments.

Dr. Eileen Garay is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy and a Clinical Education Coordinator at the Miller School of Medicine University of Miami DPT Program. She is a course master and supplemental instructor in the neurological series of courses for the DPT curriculum, and core faculty and clinical mentor for the University of Miami/Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital Neurological Residency Program. Dr. Garay received her BS in Physical Therapy from Florida International University in 1997, Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 2014, and is currently pursuing a PT Ph.D., with a focus on vestibular rehabilitation. She completed the Vestibular Rehabilitation: Competency-Based Course from Emory University in 2003, and subsequently various advanced courses. Dr. Garay has an extensive clinical career with specialization in neurological, balance, and vestibular disorders, and is American Physical Therapy Association credentialed in the treatment in Vestibular disorders.

Dr. Zahilly Salinas is an assistant professor and the Associate Director of Clinical Education at the Miller School of Medicine University of Miami Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She is a course master and supplemental instructor in various courses in the DPT curriculum. She is also core faculty and a mentor for the University of Miami/Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital Neurologic Residency Program in Physical Therapy. Dr. Salinas graduated from the University of Miami DPT program in 2010 and holds certifications in pilates, kinesio taping and is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor. Her clinical practice is in orthopedics, neurology and she is American Physical Therapy Association credentialed in the treatment in Vestibular disorders.

Dr. Angelica Taylor completed her doctorate in physical therapy at Nova Southeastern University in 2014 and became a board certified neurologic clinical specialist in 2017. She has clinical experience in outpatient, inpatient, and acute care with a primary focus on neurological and vestibular disorders. In 2019 she attended and received certification in the APTA and Duke University competency based vestibular rehabilitation course. She is currently serving as the program coordinator and is a mentor and core faculty for the University of Miami-Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital Physical Therapy Neurologic Residency Program. In addition to this role, she is a supplemental instructor and guest lecturer in both the Neurological Evaluation and the Neurological Rehabilitation courses at the University of Miami Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
